Acts of Faith

Jesus was my alarm clock for sixteen years

I asked Jesus to wake me up a 6 am each morning. The next morning, I awoke to a presence standing at the foot of my bed. No words were spoken between us and I couldn't really see any details; I just knew there was a presence standing there.

In 1992, during a college winter break, I was at an 8 day silent retreat at the University of Detroit Mercy. We all lived and slept in the former Jesuit priests' house. Because I was working part time, I still had to get up some days to go to work for a few hours. But there was one problem. I had forgotten an alarm clock, nor did my room at the…

Prayer turned Lowell’s deep grief to deep peace

"With tears coming down my face I cried out to God and asked that He bring the Holy Spirit upon me and give me peace. Within one hour, I had the most incredible peace come over me!"

My dad had a heart attack back in 1999 and passed away about one month later. The day before his heart attack was his birthday, November 17. I had a VERY restless spirit that day, and I HAD TO SEE MY DAD THAT DAY!!!! I was thinking to myself, "What is up with this? Why am I so restless and uneasy?" Normally I would travel to see him every weekend, as we were very close. But I decided to add a visit and…

Mildred Howell, exhilarated! "It was really something!"

"The presence of Jesus simply overwhelmed me. I was immersed in His love and I couldn't help but cry, but not out of sadness. It was exhilaration. I really experienced His love, and that was the beginning of my new relationship with Jesus."

All my life I've believed in God. But over the last six years he's let me experience his love in ways that have made a tremendous difference to me, though they're sometimes difficult to describe.

Six years ago I thought that my whole life was in order. Everything was fine. God was not extremely personal to me; he was omnipotent and distant. But…

Ray Maloney, headmaster, has miraculous recovery from chronic anxiety

"I spent most of my life convinced that there was nothing about me that people could really love. Finally, about four years ago, I started to break apart. I came totally undone, and it scared me to death."  - Ray Maloney, Headmaster of a private academy

For most of my life I believed that I wasn't of any importance to anyone. That puzzles people when I say this, because I've always seemed successful. But I spent most of my life convinced that there was nothing about me that people could really love. As a result, I could never really love others.

My memory of these feeling of…

Paul Weber explains his personal relationship with Jesus

My relationship with Jesus Christ, before this renewal took place, was sort of like my relationship with the President. I knew a great deal about him. But I didn't really know him. Just as I had never personally met the President, so I had never personally met Jesus Christ.

I'm an old dog, seventy-two years old, and I've been a devout and active Catholic all my life. I always felt that I had a real devotion to God, and tried to carry out my religious duties without letting up. I would beat my kids out of sleeping bags on camping trips and drive forty miles to get to Mass because it…

Love your enemies? - How about a would-be thief?

Love your enemies?  Yes!  I more fully understood "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding" in this potentially dangerous situation.

Every chilly January in downtown Detroit, the North American International Auto Show lights up Cobo Hall. My friend Dennis, an employee of a Detroit-based Christian radio station, and I decided to attend one evening and see what new cars the industry had this year. When we had our fill of glitz and engines, we decided to walk into the neighborhood to get a late night bite. We knew of Lafayette Coney Island on Lafayette Boulevard, and made…

A simple life serving Jesus - is better than a miracle

On Nov. 8, 2011,  I went to the funeral visitation of Kathleen G. (Kay) Houston, a woman who lived by all accounts with one primary objective: To serve Jesus as best she could on her limited means. The result was that she brought the love of Jesus to dozens of people, and now these people have a stronger faith of their own.

How? At the visitation, the hundred or so people in the seats were asked to come to the microphone to talk about Kay. One after another, they described how they were of the opinion that Kay was their best friend. (!) Kay did not have a lot of money. She worked for…

They kept praying even when things looked bad

This is a follow-up story about Pedro, Felicia and Victor (see story titled "Holy Spirit woke her at 2am to ask her to pray, and...").

Pedro said that at the time his son Victor was in his rebellious 20's, Pedro's wife and he were very worried about how he was acting and behaving. He was hanging around people who would influence him badly. They didn't know what else to do, so they prayed. For years they prayed that he would meet a good Catholic girl who would bring him back to Christ.

Eventually, Victor did meet a Catholic girl. She was a fallen-away Catholic. To the surprise of…
