How long does love last?

On the birthday anniversary of my recently deceased Mother in July, I went to her gravesite in Rochester Hills, Michigan at the Guardian Angels cemetery. When I went, I was not exactly sure why I wanted or needed to go. Sure, I’m a person who believes in the afterlife, but I’m also a pragmatist, and not much of a sentimentalist. I think: “Since my Mom’s current life is as a soul in the afterlife, the body she left behind is no more than an empty container… it’s not the real her. I can’t see that body anyway. It’s in a grave. Also, I can remember her from anywhere on the…

God helped Caregiver without being asked. Gave her energy to continue after the point of exhaustion.

At the time this Godly coincidence occurred, 'Yellowdog' (I don't know her real name... she is a participant in Amazon's Askville in the Spirituality and Religion forum, like I am) was overwhelmed and exhausted from taking care of a dying woman who never questioned God's existence Yellowdog, by contrast, was indifferent to whether God existed or not, and, despite her own exhaustion and the dying lady's extreme suffering, refused to directly seek God's help for her own sake or for the dying lady's sake. I find it wonderful that God apparently 'jumped in' and gave her what she needed…

Prayers work even for the grouchy

Father Peter Fennessey of the Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan tells this funny story of an answered prayer… a migraine headache is instantly cured, with extra benefits.

One day, former retreat house director James S. was unable to sleep for hours because of a migraine headache. So he went down to the gathering room to watch some TV, no matter what was on. He hoped that any noise and motion would distract him from the pain. Surprisingly, despite it being the middle of the night, another priest was already there, watching TV. This guy was a grouchy old…

Total Confidence in God eliminates this lady’s fear of cancer

The fear, the breathless anxiety I was so used to was totally absent. I saw the solid substance of peace in her eyes as she smiled at me.

I sat at the nurse’s station reviewing my first patient of the day. I flipped through her chart as the techs prepared her for the procedure. Nothing special. She was a 56 year old lady from Bradenton, Florida, who had a coin-sized mass seen in one of her lungs on a routine chest x-ray. Using computed tomography I had been requested by her referring physician to get a piece of tissue from the nodule to be examined under a microscope, by the…

"Ask Daniel to Pray for the Fire"

About 4-5 years ago, my son Daniel and I were planning on spending a weekend together at home . . . the girls were going out of town. Our plans were modest; one of the most anticipated events was cooking up some hobo pies (sandwiches made in cast-iron skillets) over a backyard campfire, and watching late night movies under 'blanket tents' in the family room. So, all week we were looking forward to hanging out, and I saw the anticipation building in his eyes as the weekend approached. Simple plans, safe expectations, quality time.

On Saturday night, we went back to our fire pit and…

200 roses confirmed my decision

In May 2008, I was granted an interview at the IHM Motherhouse in Southeastern Michigan (Editor’s note: A community of Catholic nuns; IHM stands for “Immaculate Heart of Mary”), for a position as the Administrative Assistant to the President of the Community, Sister Mary Fran Gilleran. The interview went well.

Let me pause here and mention a bit about my prayer background. I am Catholic, and I have a favorite saint, Therese of Lisieux, “The Little Flower”. When people pray to Therese for an intervention, a common way that she sends confirmation of having heard the prayer is…
