Pedro Gutierrez (not his real name) told this story directly to Bill Griffin, a frequent contributor to WTNESS.ORG. Pedro is married to Felicia, and they have a son named Victor. A number of years ago, when Victor was in his early 20's, Victor was causing the parents concern about his rebelious behavior. He looked the part too: very long hair, drove a loud motorcycle, liked to wear a long black coat. He was dating a very attractive and well endowed woman at the time.
One night, Felicia was awakened at 2am by the impulse that she needed to pray for Victor right away. She woke up Pedro and told him about the impulse to pray and Pedro agreed they should pray. They prayed for 10 minutes intently.
The next day, they contacted Victor, who told this story: He and his girlfriend had been in a bar at around 2am, and some people were showing some angry, jealous behavior to them, and they decided to leave quickly. As they drove away, the angry people followed them with a gun, and tried to run them off the road. The chase car passed them with a gun pointing out the window at them, and Victor stopped his car and turned it around to escape in the opposite direction. He felt lucky that they were able get away safely.
Pedro told me that he was convinced that it really was the holy spirit who woke up Felicia, and that their responding by praying was connected with the fact that the gunshot missed his son.
Bill asked Pedro what his reaction was when Felicia first disturbed his sleep to suggest that prayer for their son needed to be done at that exact moment. Did he think, "That's the most foolish thing I've heard of. It can wait until morning!"
He said no, he didn't hesitate to follow along. Because he was a regular listener of Focus on the Family, and had heard Dr. James Dobson tell similar stories, so he believed they could happen.
His advice was "Err on the side of thinking that it really is the Lord. Don't discount it."
How WTNESS.ORG heard of this story: Pedro (not his real name) and frequent WTNESS.ORG contributor Bill Griffin attend the same church, Christ Our Light, in Birmingham, Michigan. When Pedro shared this story with Bill in conversation, Bill wrote it for submission here with Pedro's permission.
