How Jesus Speaks to Us

Bible verse directly answered her dead friend's question

During August, I had resolved to read a chapter of John's gospel a day. On the day I was due to read Chapter 16, a call came telling me one of my most cherished friends had died that afternoon. As I hung up the phone, I repeated to my husband the question my friend had raised in the course of our last conversation.

"I wonder if all our questions will be answered when we get to heaven," she had said, "or if we will have no more questions..."

With her words echoing through my thoughts, I went off alone. I took my bible with me since there was still a chapter of John to read that…

My Mom died 10 days ago. Why do I love God more?

On March 3, my mother died. It rocked me. This woman who raised me from an infant; who poured herself into the care and formation of her four children... was no longer on this world. We each need a mother. I no longer had mine.

For many days prior to her passing and many days after her passing, I found myself overwhelmed by the quickly rising waters of sadness. On three occasions, I broke down while other people were present. Once it was in the middle of church. (I think it embarrassed my wife, who simultaneously put her arm on me to show her support).

I could keep the sadness at bay…

It was like there was an orchestra conductor in the sky

This real-life coincidence indicates to me the love of Jesus in the days before my Mom's death, because we were provided exactly what we needed in a surprise way, even though she still died.

It was on the day that, looking back, was the first day of my Mom's one-week-long dying process. Things started happening very quickly and very unexpectedly. People normally describe a day like that as a day when 'All hell broke loose'. But above it all, it became clear to me that also on that same day, 'All heaven broke loose'.

It was Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. My Mom had revealed to us a week…

Opened to Just the Right Bible Verse – God’s Forgiveness of our Wrongs

Sometimes when I sit down in a soft chair to settle my world by reading the Bible, I say a quick prayer to the Lord like, "Tell me what I need to hear, Lord", and open to a page at random. Today I closed my eyes and thumbed open to Zechariah 1:12-16. It reads,

Then the angel of the LORD replied, "LORD of hosts, how long will you be without mercy for Jerusalem and the cities of Judah that have felt your anger these seventy years?"
To the angel who spoke with me, the LORD replied favorably, with comforting words.
The angel who spoke with me then said to me, Proclaim: Thus says the LORD of…

Good Friday Special Effect – Sunlight Vanished When Jesus Died

I still get happy chills when I think about this one. It was about thirteen years ago. My workplace didn't offer Good Friday as a holiday, so I took a break from work in the middle of the day and was attending a church near my workplace. I can't remember the name of the church, but I do remember that perpendicular to the altar were two very tall and thin windows. The window on the right was positioned in a way that the sunlight came in strongly and lit the wall to the left of the crucifix hanging immediately behind the altar.

As the service progressed, the story of Jesus' crucifixion…

Real Life Pentecost Experience

My wife Mary and I were visiting our friends Ken and Carol in their house on a Pentecost Sunday. We went to socialize and we started the visit by breaking open the Bible and reading Acts 2, because that describes the original Pentecost day.

We read the following lines:

"And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit"

Then a freaky and wonderful thing happened. We all…

Unusual coincidence inspires young lady to produce a play by the former Pope

A few months ago, Danielle Center, 25, an administrative assistant in the Detroit Archdiocesan Office of Digital Media, was considering doing a production of the play "The Jeweler's Shop", a play written in 1960 by Karol Wojtyla, the Polish priest who would later become Pope John Paul II. She was still undecided when she went to a Lenten retreat in Chicago, which includes the opportunity to go to Confession.

"When I left for the retreat I wondered if I should pray about the play while on retreat and decided against praying. I felt that I would rather just go into the retreat with an…

Young mother feels personally forgiven by Jesus after cheating on her husband

I am an occasional participant in the Askville by Amazon “Religion and Spirituality” discussion forum. A woman who I'll call Rachel Townsley (she did not want others to know even her login name) wrote this brief but amazing post about seeing Jesus in a dream and how it changed her.  I asked her by email to elaborate.  Here is the original posting and the resulting email thread.  (Bill Griffin)

I had this dream about being in a church by myself and communion was going on. I was sitting on a bench praying to the statue that looked like Jesus. I was asking for forgiveness. And…
