After prayer, unexpected visions and healings

"We closed our eyes and started praying and I saw a vision in my head of an anguished, tear streamed face of a young child about 8 years old screaming “Mama, Mama!”

I have been involved for some time with healing through the graces of the Holy Spirit, both receiving healing and being part of the instrument for healing. I can remember the first time, some 30 years ago, when I was part of a prayer team meeting at Duns Scotus in Southfield Michigan under the guidance of Fr. Duane Stenzel OFM.

One day a young man came in asking for prayer, but wouldn’t share anything specific. As we closed our eyes and prayed over him, I clearly saw a picture in my head of a boy sitting at a kitchen table and an older man standing over him and they were yelling at each other.

As a “rookie” with Healing prayer, I wasn’t sure what to do, but shared aloud what I saw. The young man burst into tears and said that the man was his father and that they had been in their kitchen just this morning and had a nasty argument. From then, the leader of the prayer team gently proceeded to lead the prayer into the specific situation. The sense of peace that came over the young man and his gratitude as he left the session re-confirmed for me how much God loves us and wants us to know and experience His peace ... and that He will use all available instruments to do that.

I didn’t think anything was unusual about my experience as there seemed to be many “signs and wonders” going on with all the prayer groups and Healing sessions at Duns Scotus. It was a bit of a “spiritual oasis” during the 80’s. I know of others that had similar experiences to mine. It truly was a great feeling to know you are being used by the Holy Spirit in some way.

It was some time later that I was to experience the same intervention of God’s healing love, but this time, it wasn’t in a Healing session, but “just” a prayer group.

I was staying out of town on business and, as was my habit, went to a prayer meeting at a local church. One woman in the prayer group shared about her adult daughter acting out and causing all kinds of trouble with the family. She wanted prayers for peace in the family and her daughter to stop doing the things she was doing. We closed our eyes and started praying and I saw a vision in my head of an anguished, tear streamed face of a young child about 8 years old screaming “Mama, Mama!” I was startled but didn’t have too much time to think about it as another vision came to me with the face of a weeping young girl about 14 years old again screaming “Mama, Mama!”

Well, I didn’t know these people and this woman was in enough pain as it was … and besides we were finished and leaving, so I was about the let the vision go unannounced, when my stomach started tightening and I must have reacted because the leader of the group asked if I was OK. I told him I had seen a vision and much to my embarrassment, he called the group back into the room to hear what I saw.

I explained what I saw and sure enough the woman with the daughter acting up started really weeping. She said that she and her husband had suspected that their daughter had been molested by her uncle when she was 8 years old and again when she was 14 and never did anything about it. I don’t remember what happened after that as she said she knew what she had to do and the prayer session broke up.

I tried to schedule my business trips into that town on the days those prayer meetings were held and got to know the leader quite well. He once confided in me that they had watched me leave that first meeting to see if I got into a car or if I was an angel and would just disappear … we had a good laugh at that.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a particularly holy man, nor do these “visions” happen often when I pray for someone. But it does seem that the Holy Spirit has granted me a gift to help others to know the love of the Father … and again, I am certainly grateful to be an instrument in His service.

How WTNESS.ORG found out about this story:  WTNESS.ORG contributor Bill Griffin was attending a retreat at the Manresa Retreat Center in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in January, 2013, and was having a casual one-on-one conversation late one night with one of the other attendees at the retreat named Gerry.  Gerry is the long-time leader of a local Men's Fellowship group that meets weekly at a local church.  Bill was sharing some of the hard-to-believe events that happened to him that had long ago convinced him of the reality of God. Gerry surprised Bill by telling this story.  Gerry later wrote it for WTNESS.ORG at the request of Bill.
